Our annual PROMISE AGEP Fall Harvest Dinner at College Park will be held on Friday, Nov. 16, 2012, 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM. This is our “Thanksgiving Dinner” for PROMISE graduate students, postdocs, alumni, faculty, and staff. Students have a chance to be rejuvenated, re-connect, and network with others on different campuses who share research and other interests.
This event is free for PROMISE graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, faculty, and staff from UMCP, UMBC, UMB, and institutions within the University System of Maryland.
The Fall Harvest Dinner is sponsored by PROMISE: Maryland’s AGEP with additional financial support from the Graduate School at the University of Maryland College Park and The Graduate School at UMBC.

Broadly, graduate students can participate in PROMISE regardless of their status (full-time, part-time), ethnicity, citizenship, discipline, or source of funding. Narrowly, students who are underrepresented will be strongly supported as they utilize the services and resources of PROMISE; these students can be encouraged to consider PROMISE to be one of their major mechanisms of support. Faculty, postdoctoral scholars, and staff are also welcome to attend.

Parking Option 1: Pay Stations In Union Lane Garage next to Stamp Student Union
Union Lane Garage is equipped with pay stations to purchase parking in incremenets of 15 minutes, hours, or the whole day.
There are pay stations located at the pedestrian entrances/exits to the garage. You can pay for time with credit card or cash at any of the pay stations or with credit card only by calling 888-580-PARK [7275].
1. Park in garage.
2. Take note of your space number.
3. Make payment.
4. Optional: Add additional time later either at a pay station or by using your cell phone.
The pay stations will issue a paper receipt for your records, which you do not need to display in your vehicle.
Option 2: Free Parking In Lot 1
After 4PM Monday – Friday, visitors may park for free in Lot 1, the large surface lot just beyond the Cole Fieldhouse, to the left of the Stamp Student Union.

If you plan to ride the bus from UMBC to College Park, please be sure that you send a message to promisestaff@gmail.com to reserve your space. You may either reply to an email that you may have received for the bus (sent to all UMBC students), or send a message to promisestaff@gmail.com with the subject “BUS FOR FALL HARVEST.”
Other students from the Baltimore area, e.g. Coppin, Towson, UMB, or others who live north, are welcome to take advantage of this transportation opportunity.

I enjoyed the Fall Harvest Dinner this year. I was able to sit with other students who weren’t part of the BD fellowship program and learned about new experiences in majors outside of HCC. The event even encouraged my friend to apply to graduate school within the next two years to study Human-Centered Computing. I look forward to the next Fall Harvest.

The fall Harvest Dinner is a great place to meet new people and socialize and interact with colleagues from other institutions that we may not have the chance to see in a regular basis. I have attended this meeting twice, and we always learn new things from each other and manage to make new friends and reawaken old ones. This year I was fortunate to bring another student with me to the meeting, so that she also had the chance to take advantage from this experience.

Though I was unable to attend the Fall Harvest dinner this year, I did attend the dinner last year. It is an excellent opportunity to expand your network, and meet other BD’s. I enjoyed my time last year, and had the opportunity to meet the Vice Provost of NSF Bridge to The Doctorate Program at College Park. The dinner was also an excellent opportunity to learn about other graduate students’ experiences, struggles, and accomplishments. The environment is very relaxing and laid-back, and is an excellent opportunity to take a study break. The food is superb as always.

Again, I was delighted to share an evening with other PROMISE graduate students and eat a great meal as I got to know my peers better. I made sure to sit at a table with people who I didn’t sit with last year so I could introduce myself to new faces as a seond-time attendee. It was a great time to share experiences, struggles, and just have normal conversation with other intellectuals. It was also nice to hear about some student experiences related to the 2012 SREB Compact for Faculty Diversity Conference near the end of the dinner. I hope this Fall Harvest Dinner remains a tradition for years to come.

I enjoyed the Fall Harvest dinner. It was my first year attending and the food was delicious. It was a great event and I was able to meet a lot of the PROMISE graduate students from the various universities in the area. Also, I was able to hear their stories about being a graduate student which was very useful seeing this is only my first semester. Being at this dinner was incredibly motivating and it’s wonderful to know the support that is available with being a part of the PROMISE family.
