This is an annual event. We have been hosting the Fall Harvest Dinner since 2003. This event is free for all graduate students and postdocs who attend an institution within the University System of Maryland (USM), and who support the mission of PROMISE: Maryland’s AGEP. The mission of PROMISE is to increase the numbers and diversity of STEM faculty by supporting and training underrepresented minority graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in STEM disciplines.
We will sponsor a bus for this activity. The bus will leave from UMBC, and can make a stop at BWI airport if that is convenient. To take the bus, send email to PROMISEstaff@gmail.com with the subject “Bus to Fall Harvest 2014.” Indicate BWI or UMBC for pick-up and droffoff. Provide your name, email, and a cell number. Details for the pick-up and drop-off times will be posted in the comments section.

Dr. Renetta Garrison Tull is the Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) at the University of California Davis. She previously served as Associate Vice Provost for Strategic Initiatives at The Graduate School at UMBC, and was Professor of the Practice in the College of Engineering & IT. She was Special Assistant to the Sr. Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs & Director of Graduate and Professional Pipeline Development for the University System of Maryland (12 institutions). She is the Founding Director of PROMISE: Maryland’s Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP) – http://www.umbc.edu/promise, and Co-PI for the USM LSAMP. Her research on global diversity in STEM continues, and she is an international speaker, covering nearly all continents, for groups and conferences such as the World Engineering Education Forum, the International Federation of Engineering Education Societies, and the Pacific Sciences Congress. BUS TRANSPORTATION:
A bus will depart from the front of the Commons Building on UMBC’s campus to travel to College Park at 5:00 PM on Friday, Nov. 21, 2014. The bus will leave College Park at 8:15 PM to return to UMBC.
If you would like to ride the bus, please send email to promisestaff@gmail.com, with the subject “Bus for Fall Harvest 2014.” Your email must include the following:
1) Name
2) Academic Department (no abbreviations)
3) School or College(e.g., School of Natural and Mathematical Sciences)
4) Name of your university
5) Name of your Graduate School Dean
6) Your Eventbrite Ticket # (Order #, from your confirmation email, also printed on the ticket that was attached to your confirmation email.)
Once you send the email I will send an email confirming your seat on the bus.

I am glad we have a mix of these activities and professional activities in Promise. At the dinner, I was able to meet students from other USM institutions. I am glad I sat at a table with these other students because I got to talk to the other students about their experiences and academic programs. I also liked that people were able to bring family members so we can all see everyone has a life outside of academics and we can balance that! Lastly, I was able to meet and put faces to names that I have seen, for example, I was introduced to Dr. Rutledge.

This was a great dinner, and I really value the opportunities that Promise provides to network through events like this. I was able to meet graduate students who are in my field at other campuses, and get tips for being successful throughout the graduate school process. The food was very good, the venue was beautiful, and overall I felt glad to be part of this night, because it afforded me the opportunity to receive words of encouragement and enjoy the positive attitudes of other graduate students and professionals.

This was a very inspiring event. It encouraged me to move forward with getting my PhD. The stories told by all of the students and doctors were moving. This event was also a great chance to meet BDs from other schools and to associate with people from all over MD. I am very happy to be a part of this program, where we can take advantage of these types of events. They are opportunities of inspiration that must be used in a positive way towards our own paths. On a side note the food was great.

Besides the amazing food this event was very informative. The keynote speaker was captivating, he encourage graduate students and provided his experience while at College park. It was also pretty cool to see other BDs. Overall I had a blast and look forward attending next year!

I really enjoyed being able to participate in this event, From seeing familiar faces from the various universities in Maryland to hearing about the different experiences that many of my fellow graduate students have had. This event was both enlightening and inspiring, I cannot wait to attend the dinner next year.
