PROF-it: Professors in Training

PROF-it: Professors-in-Training is the “Preparing Future Faculty” arm of PROMISE: Maryland’s Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP). PROF-it: Professors-in-Training, is a program for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows that provides opportunities for training and hands-on teaching. Our partners include research universities, teaching institutions, and community colleges. The PROF-it seminars and workshops are designed to prepare students for teaching opportunities. Students who participate in PROF-it training have the opportunity to be nominated for several of our hands-on teaching programs, including paid, mentored teaching fellows programs.

If you are interested in a PROMISE-facilitated teaching experience at one of our teaching partner institutions: Community College of Baltimore County, Anne Arundel Community College, or AGMUS University, please send your CV to with the subject: “Interest in PROF-it.”

We participate in CIRTL: The Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning.

PROMISE now participates more actively in the CIRTL network due to UMBC’s new position as an official member of the center. The University of Maryland College Park  has been a member of CIRTL for a while, and we will be working together to get more information out to the graduate student and postdoctoral communities. Workshops within the CIRTL network are now available to you! CIRTLCasts: Audio and Slide presentations on topics that will assist with your teaching.

Flipped Classrooms: What Are They, and Why Should You Use Them?

Speaker: Martha Dunkelberger, Assistant Clinical Professor, Undergraduate Program Coordinator, Communication Sciences and Disorders, University of Houston
Discussion: Flipped classrooms turn the traditional teaching model on its head by introducing students to new concepts outside of class (rather than through lectures) and using class time to deepen that knowledge through exercises and other activities. This kind of format can fuel collaborative learning and strengthen understanding of complex topics. Join us to learn how this design works in practice and join a discussion on how it can be applied to the STEM classroom.

CIRTL-PROMISE Seminar at UMBC: Oct. 14, 2016

UMBC’s new CIRTL affiliation (Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching, and Learning) co-sponsors this seminar, along with the “Professors-in-Training – PROF-it” branch of PROMISE: Maryland’s Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate, The Office of Postdoctoral Affairs, and The Graduate School at UMBC. College Park, a long-time member of CIRTL, serves as a CIRTL mentor for UMBC’s new program. Graduate students and postdocs from all campuses are welcome to attend the CIRTL events.

Graduate students and Postdocs are invited to come to UMBC on Friday, Oct. 14, 2016 from 12 PM – 2 PM, UMBC Commons 318, for a seminar on developing a syllabus. This seminar is part of the PROF-it (Professors-in-Training) series. Participants will learn how to develop a syllabus, manage time in the classroom, and plan content for the semester. Guest Facilitator: Dr. Linda Hodges, Director, UMBC Faculty Development Center.

Fall 2014 Session Follow-Up: Community Discussion Boards


  • The PROF-it “Professors-in-Training” program provides professional development opportunities for graduate students and postdocs at UMBC who are interested in teaching, with the goal of preparing to become leaders in the professoriate. Participants engage with an active teaching and learning community through workshops and ongoing dialogues that strengthen their understanding of teaching and learning foundations while building essential skills that they can apply in the classroom.
  • On UMBC’s campus, the Office of Undergraduate Education encourages graduate students to engage early undergraduates in its “Introduction to an Honors University” program.
  • The partnership between UMBC and the Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC) gives participants an opportunity for recommendation to teach a class at one of the CCBC campuses. If accepted, participants receive mentorship by a faculty member from CCBC, and they will be added to CCBC’s payroll and receive a stipend around $2000.
  • We also partner with Anne Arundel Community College (AACC) and the new, fully bilingual Ana G. Mendez University System (AGMUS) Capital Area Campus in Wheaton, MD. PROF-it participants who meet the requirements for recommendation have a competitive advantage when applying for teaching positions at these institutions.
  • Interested PROF-it participants should begin by researching the general position openings at each institution to get a feel for the expectations for future members of the faculty. Take note of the types of openings offered in your discipline, and review your own CV for areas of strength and continual development. Attend and contribute to PROF-it events and forums in order to build upon your skills and receive credit toward recommendations for open positions. Below are quick links for each campus:

  • Please make sure that your thesis Advisor and/or your Graduate Program Director are aware that you are applying for any program. Time commitment may vary from class to class, but be prepared to spend at least 3 hours of preparation per one hour of class time. Also remember to allot time to attend the required  additional training sessions during the semester.
